food processing lighting

Lighting in food processing facilities must provide precise vertical illumination and optical quality while meeting IP, NSF, washdown and hazard rating requirements for demanding environments. Proper lighting combined with control features helps create a safer, more hygienic and more efficient environment while reducing maintenance costs by up to 40%.

In the food and luxury food industry, lighting rooms involves special photometric, hygienic and electrical technical challenges. Therefore, the viable lighting solution: contain no glass and contain only covered light sources, resistant to breakage, moisture, cold, vibration and chemical cleaning agents depending on their application.

Here are some key considerations when determining the lighting requirements for a food processing facility:

1. Hygiene and Sanitation:

Choose fixtures with smooth surfaces that are easy to clean to maintain a hygienic environment. Use materials that resist corrosion and degradation from cleaning agents.

2. CRI and CCT

Select lighting with a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) to accurately represent colors, which is crucial for tasks involving food inspection. Consider the appropriate color temperature to suit the specific tasks and areas within the facility. Cool white light is often preferred for better visibility.

3. Light Levels and Uniformity:

Determine the required light levels for different areas, such as processing, packaging, and storage. Ensure uniform distribution of light to eliminate shadows and maintain consistent visibility.

4. IP Rating and Corrosion Resistance:

Given the potential exposure to moisture and washdown procedures, choose fixtures with a high Ingress Protection (IP) rating to prevent water ingress. Select fixtures made of materials that resist corrosion, especially in areas where exposure to corrosive substances is likely.

5. Impact Resistance:

Install fixtures that are resistant to impact, especially in areas where there is a risk of physical contact or objects falling.

In addition, companies in food distribution are subject to the same strict specifications for selecting LED luminaires as companies working in food production and food processing. Even manufacturers of packaging for food products are obligated to comply to safety standards such as the BRC Global Standard or the International Food Standard (IFS).
