FIFA and UEFA Football Stadium Lighting Requirements

by YAHAM | May 26, 2023 | Company news | 3961

Both FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) and UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) have specific requirements for stadium lighting in football matches. While we can provide general information on lighting requirements, it's important to note that the regulations and standards may vary slightly between different competitions and events. Here are some general guidelines:

Illuminance Levels: The minimum average illuminance level for TV broadcasting is typically around 1,500 lux (lumens per square meter) on the playing surface, with a minimum uniformity ratio of 0.7. However, higher illuminance levels are often preferred for high-profile matches or competitions.

Glare Control: Stadium lighting systems should be designed to minimize glare, which can affect players and spectators. Specific requirements for glare control may include using appropriate lighting fixtures, positioning them at proper angles, and implementing anti-glare measures.

Flicker Control: Lighting systems should minimize flickering to ensure optimal visibility for players and viewers. The lighting should have a flicker frequency above 100 Hz to avoid interference with TV broadcasting equipment.

Color Temperature: The recommended color temperature for football stadium lighting is usually in the range of 4000K to 6000K (Kelvin). This range provides a balance between visibility and color rendering, allowing for clear visibility of players and the ball.

Lighting Uniformity: The lighting should be uniform across the playing surface to avoid uneven illumination and shadows that could affect gameplay and TV broadcasts. The minimum uniformity ratio is often set at 0.7, meaning that the lowest illuminance level should be at least 70% of the average illuminance level.

Control Systems: Stadium lighting systems should be equipped with advanced control systems that allow for dimming, zoning, and dynamic lighting effects. This enables the adjustment of lighting levels based on different match situations, energy efficiency requirements, and other factors.

It's worth noting that these guidelines are subject to change, and FIFA and UEFA may update their requirements over time. For specific events or competitions, it's essential to consult the respective organizing bodies or refer to the official regulations and guidelines provided for that particular tournament.
